A Film by Kurt Langbein

Faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis, science journalist Kurt Langbein embarks on a personal and global investigation into dying—and discovers a surprising truth amid intensive care units, palliative care, spiritual traditions, and near-death experiences: dying is something that can be learned.

We all know that we will die. And yet we live as if this certainty has nothing to do with us. We repress it, put it off, leave dying to the hospitals, the experts, the others. Only when illness, loss, or our own diagnosis intrudes into our lives does an abstract truth become a personal question.

In DYING FOR BEGINNERS, the multi-award-winning science journalist and documentary filmmaker Kurt Langbein tackles a topic that affects us all—yet is rarely discussed: dying. The film begins with his own battle with cancer, transforming into a deeply personal quest for guidance, knowledge, and stability. The reporter becomes a patient, and the research turns into an existential self-experiment.

Langbein visits intensive care units and palliative care wards, speaking with doctors, philosophers, researchers, and end-of-life caregivers. He accompanies people as they grapple with their approaching death and meets survivors of near-death experiences who speak of moments of profound fear as well as of peace, light, and radical transformation. This way, the film unfolds a broad panorama spanning high-tech medicine, questions of ethical boundaries, personal grief, spiritual longing, and the hope for a self-determined end of life.

It is never about simple answers. DYING FOR BEGINNERS is neither a medical guide nor a spiritual testimony. Rather, the film is an open, intelligent, and moving exploration of life’s ultimate question. What does dignity at the end of life mean? When does treatment become a burden? How do loved ones cope with letting go? And can confronting death even change our lives?

Particularly because the film is told in such a personal way, it achieves a profound universality. Langbein shows that dying is not merely a biological event, but a social, emotional, cultural, and philosophical process. He combines scientific insights with personal experiences and transforms a taboo subject into an invitation to conversation—serious, empathetic, and surprisingly true to life.

DYING FOR BEGINNERS is a film about mortality, but it is not a dark film. It talks about fear and pain, of loss of control and saying goodbye. Above all, however, it talks about love, closeness, touch, comfort, and the possibility of facing the inevitable not only with fear, but also with awareness.

A documentary that changes the way we view the end of life—and, in doing so, sharpens our perspective on life itself.
