More than a thousand people in Austria earn their income through an activity, which is commonly not regarded as work: they beg. In this documentary, Florian Kröppel approaches the topic from various perspectives.
Kröppel presents opinions that range from "If someone doesn't work, he doesn't deserve money either" to "Recent bans on begging are merely a euphemism for the discrimination of Romany people". The documentary sparks questions such as:
Why is the public so concerned with begging that politicians and the police feel that steps must be taken against a "mafia of beggars"? While Franciscan begging monks are usually welcomed, begging due to poverty evokes disgust in vast parts of the population – and aggression, especially against "foreigners". Do we really want to get to know the beggar on the street? Doesn't his sight awake a fear in us, that we may end up like him one day?
A documentary about people and their fates and about people who refuse to accept these fates.
