Antibiotics in meat and fish, pesticide residue in fruits and vegetables as well as coloring, plasticizers and flavor enhancers all over the place – our food is full of chemical additives. There are even poisonous substances in vegan and organic products as evidenced by the recent find of arsenic in rice cakes. Along with that, there is an abundance of chemicals to be found in our cosmetic products, in the water we drink and in the air we breathe.

"A Bitter Harvest" sheds light on the conditions under which our food is produced, processed and consumed. The film follows the products' journey from the field onto our plates. It shows the pesticides used as well as the additives and synthetic materials that our food comes into contact with.

Non-communicable diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, diabetes, infertility, allergies and auto-immune diseases have been on the rise in industrial countries for over 30 years. The cause for this development is to be found in the poisoning of our environment – and in our food.
