Our life expectancy is increasing and Austrians are getting older and older – according to predictions 40 percent of the population will be over 80 by mid-century. Collapse of the pension system, shortage of nurses, senilism and the generational divide: in this country the demographical change is mostly known as a problem. However, not the aging is the problem but our way of life and our attitude towards age. Those factors play a major part in causing sickness and need for care.

"Aging without Burden" shows through the stories of individuals how and why Austria is "burdened by age". Austrians fall ill earlier and for longer periods of time and a higher number of people is deemed not "fit for work anymore" than in any other country in Europe. These findings call for improvement and alternatives – this documentary portrays societies and systems who have realized the added value of age. These countries can be role models for us in fields like shortage of nurses, social isolation, societal tensions and in many more.
