The "Dorf der Denker" (village of thinkers) is situated in the Tyrolean Alps and has been shaping science, culture and politics for generations with its liberal European ideas. Personal accounts from four generations show that even today the Forum Alpbach can provide new perspectives over and above the narrowness of our own thinking.
It started in 1945: after being freed from Nazi rule, intellectuals were in need of new focal points for their ideas of a peaceful Europe. Otto Molden and Simon Moser therefore held the first "Internationale Hochschulwochen" (international summer seminars) with 80 students. From 1949 onwards the seminars were known as "Europäisches Forum Alpbach“ (European Forum Alpbach).
This documentary shows the Forum's development in exciting episodes, in which prominent persons from academia and politics alike as well as locals recount how Alpbach has influenced their lives. The memories of personalities such as Fritz Molden, Barbara Coudenhove-Kalergi, Hannes Androsch, Karl Schwarzenberg, Erhard Busek and many more add up to multifaceted image of intellectual developments. Milana Sredojevic, a young Serbian intellectual, sums up the Forum's history: "70 years ago, the Forum was founded to build bridges after the Second World War and to reunite Europe. The Forum still holds this task today – for example for the Balkan region."
