The film is rooted in the idea to walk around the borders of a country – to explore passages. The journey leads us around a country which is now, after almost a thousand years, its own nation again: Slovenia, whose borders are shaped by central European countries and mentalities. Slovenia borders Austria, Hungary, Italy and Croatia. All of its borders have been scarred by war.
The looks across the border should not rub salt in the wounds but should contain warning of possible crossroads. "Passages" tries to transform the painful hostilities into a joyful togetherness. On the search for its own culture, unity and language, the documentary captures a historical time for this new nation.
