Muslims and Jews have been doing it for thousands of years. A third of the male world population and two thirds of male US-Americans are circumcised. Removing the skin was seen as a natural part of religious and hygienic everyday life, which no one was upset about – until now.
Since a German court has tried the circumcision of a Muslim boy as bodily harm, feelings run high in Austria as well. Opponents and proponents of circumcision are engaging in an emotional discussion: "Jewish life would not be possible the same way, should circumcision be outlawed", says Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister and Austrian Muslims feel their freedom of faith threatened as well.
In the film "The Battle of the Foreskin" the film makers Florian Gebauer and Kurt Langbein tell the stories of the circumcisers and the circumcised, of opponents, parents and scientists. The film shows the importance of circumcision for Jews and Muslims and deals with the arising questions of parental and children's rights, health and freedom of religion.
